A post war Phono-Pioneer from Dresden capitulated

27 Feb 2015 by Günter Höhne
Seventy years ago, right after the end of the war in 1945, the Dresdner electrical engineer Heinz Hummel launched his own small business. Using stock material of the German Armed Forces, other suitable material and his improvisation skills, he created initially a flashlight out of a hand dynamo-drive and later a record player under the brand name “Dynamos”. People started to enjoy listening to music again. In the first year of the GDR the disc production (at the beginning mainly shellac discs) increased speedly, and especially the demand of portable music players in “suitcase” boomed.

The Activist Mouvement in the GDR

12 Feb 2015 by Jörn Kleinhardt
During the first year after the war, the governance had to undertake special strategies in order to increase the industrial production and economy. The dammages caused by the war casted industrial zones into poverty. I want to know what a museum this is that so far away from Germany and the Eastern bloc deals with the artifacts and the history of these countries.

“Beyond the Wall. Art and Artifacts from the GDR”

14 Jan 2015 by Admin
It’s once again time to present you here an English book about the GDR. Today it’s a very special one. Not only the content but also the size and the layout are something special. It is the biggest book out of our library and the one with the most pictures. And, I think, it’s one of the most expensive ones, too. On 904 pages you can see in this book 2500 artifacts, design pieces and everyday objects from the East German Collection of the “Wende Museum” in Los Angeles.

„Behind the Wall. ‚Perfectly Normal Lives‘ in the GDR?“

8 Oct 2014 by Admin
25 years after the Peaceful Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall there are still discussions about the GDR, about the life there, about the feelings the people had of this state. Often there is a difference between those who say the GDR was an illegitimate state and those who think, not everything was badly in the GDR. It isn’t always easy to understand how can arise two so different opinions about same different state.
