Reopening of the DDR Museum on 1 April 2023

Berlin, 16 March 2023 – On 16 December 2022, the »AquaDom« in the Radisson Collection Hotel burst, resulting in large amounts of salt water leaking into the exhibition of the DDR Museum. After 3 ½ months, the privately run museum and first affected tenant of the DomAquarée (Union Investment) has managed to repair the considerable water damage, completely restore the museum and renovate the front part of the exhibition in terms of both content and design.

A special highlight is the 6-metre-wide original Berlin Wall that awaits visitors in the entrance area of the museum. The new sections »Deutsche Teilung« (German Division) and »DDR Kompakt« (GDR Compact) can be found in front of the wall with numerous exhibition modules, new stagings and information. Screens with descriptive texts introduce visitors to the respective areas in six different languages, and content will be conveyed to visitors from all over the world in a simpler and more informative way than before.

The museum will be barrier-free from the entrance onwards, as we have installed a lift for wheelchair users as part of the renovation process.

We are pleased about the great interest shown by visitors and the advance sale of tickets is going very well. There is an astonishingly high level of interest among visitor groups; April is almost fully booked.

We will also keep you informed about developments and news on our website and via the museum's social media channels.

Our press department is happy to answer any of your journalistic questions!
