Museums and tradition cabinets were important institutions in the GDR for conveying the official image of history. Nevertheless, there were almost no new museum buildings. The emphasis was on the conversion and refurbishment of existing buildings, be they historical museum buildings, former manor houses and private residences, castles, monasteries or churches. The content of the exhibitions corresponded to the frequently changing ideological guidelines of the SED's historical policy. In his lecture, Nikolaus Bernau will discuss the role of museums in the GDR and their architectural design.
