Berlin, 13 April 2026 – Since 15 July 2006, the DDR Museum on the River Spree has been welcoming visitors from Berlin, Germany and all over the world. It invites visitors to experience the history of a state that no longer exists. In the nearly 20 years since it opened, a special milestone has now been reached: the DDR Museum has welcomed its ten-millionth visitor.
On 13 April 2026, Silvia Wieland was welcomed by the DDR Museum team as its ten-millionth visitor. The sprightly pensioner was born in Berlin-Lichtenberg and lived through the GDR era herself. After spending around three decades in Kiel, she has since returned to Berlin and now lives in Berlin-Mitte.
When asked how she came to hear about the DDR Museum, she mentioned her son. He works as a taxi driver in Berlin and had recommended that she definitely visit the museum.
Silvia Wieland has particularly vivid memories of everyday life in the GDR. With a twinkle in her eye, she talks about the cuisine and the familiar recipes of that time. “For lunch today, I had bean soup with lamb, Old Berlin style,” she says.
As the ten-millionth visitor, Silvia Wieland has been granted lifetime free entry to the DDR Museum. She was also delighted with the gift basket.
