Opening of the new »DDR Museum Depot« in Berlin-Marzahn

Berlin, 4 March 2025 – The DDR Museum, known for its permanent exhibition in Berlin-Mitte, is celebrating the opening of its new »DDR Museum Depot« in Berlin-Marzahn. Over the past two decades, one of the largest collections of everyday objects from the GDR has been created – around 360,000 exhibits, which are now housed in two halls.

Laying of the foundation stone and relocation

After a two-year building application period and lengthy approval procedures for electricity and water, the foundation stone for the new depot was laid on 24 April 2024. The modern hall was completed in just a few months. The relocation of the extensive collection from Berlin-Spandau to Berlin-Marzahn was a feat of strength, but it was worth it: the new infrastructure provides optimal conditions for collecting and preserving, researching and restoring cultural artefacts from the GDR. The total costs for the new building and relocation amount to around three million euros.

Modern depot and educational programme

The new depot offers air-conditioned rooms and is supplied with renewable energy. There are also plans to show special exhibitions on topics that have so far received little attention in the DDR Museum. With two large halls at the heart of the complex, a multifunctional centre is being created: a research facility, a restoration workshop and a place of remembrance to visit all in one. In addition, young people will have the opportunity to train in the preservation of historical artefacts and learn about their historical context.
