Berlin, 17 April 2026 – A particular highlight at the DDR Museum is a model of the Palace of the Republic. From the outset, the building was more than just a structure. It served as the seat of the People’s Chamber and as a venue for SED party congresses, as well as for major political events and state ceremonies. At the same time, as the »Palace of the People«, with its cafés, restaurants and cultural events, it was used extensively by the general public.
The model of the Palace was constructed on a scale of 1:125 and measures 200 cm by 130 cm. It is currently the largest and most detailed model of its kind. It is displayed on a plinth made from original materials from the Palace. The exhibition display cases complement the presentation with numerous objects relating to the history of the site. They explore debates and controversies as well as the closure and demolition of the building.
History is also visible above visitors’ heads. Original parts of the signage system and lighting are mounted there. They evoke the building’s distinctive atmosphere, which was popularly known as »Erich’s Lamp Shop«.
The exhibition curator at the DDR Museum, historian Sören Marotz, is available for interviews.
