20 Years of the DDR Museum – Two decades of living history in Berlin

Berlin, 22 June 2026 – More than ten million visitors, numerous milestones and a continuing commitment to historical education have shaped the museum’s success story. Since opening in 2006, the privately funded museum has established itself as a permanent fixture in Germany’s museum landscape. Even major challenges, such as the damage caused by the collapse of the AquaDom in 2022, were successfully overcome.

In its anniversary year, the DDR Museum is looking back on its development while also focusing on the future. With the depot opened in Berlin-Marzahn in 2025, new educational programmes and the film series »Places of East Germany«, the museum continues its work of exploring and communicating the history and present-day realities of eastern Germany.
