Berlin, December 19, 2019 – The game developers Michael Geithner and Martin Thiele-Schwez from Playing History will be introducing the new card game »Stasi – over and out!«. The development of the game was promoted and supported by the Stasi Records Archive and the DDR Museum. At the historical venue of the storming of the headquarters of the Ministry for State Security, short Stasi, in Berlin-Lichtenberg on January 15, 1990, representatives of the press are invited to get to know the game, try it out and talk to the makers a week before it is officially released.
After the great success of various other educational games Playing History is now releasing a card game that enables players to go into historical events 30 years ago: They take over the tasks of the Stasi employees. Their goal is to destroy as many documents as possible before they are stopped by the activists of the citizens' movement.
The unusual approach of the game, in which the players take the perspective of the Stasi, creates an easily accessible understanding of both the relevance of the events and the value of the destroyed documents for the processing of the history of the Ministry for State Security. In addition, the Stasi Records Archive publishes an supplementary booklet with background information on the subject, which is not only useful for school lessons. Anyone who plays the game with their family or friends gets information on documents from the archive as well as case studies and explanations of the Stasi methods.
At the press conference on January 9, both the creators of the game and representatives of the Stasi Records Archive and the DDR Museum will be available for interviews. A class with students from Berlin will play »Stasi – over and out!«.
