The photographer Martin Kaule, known through numerous publications, has set out on the trail of communism. His journey begins in Svalbard, where the USSR had the right to mine hard coal. Other stations include the secret submarine base of the Baltic Fleet, the prison and execution site of the KGB in Riga, the radioactive ghost town near Chernobyl, Ceaușescu's palace in Bucharest and the place where the dictator was shot. Finally, the monument of the Communist Party of Bulgaria is shown, which stands like a crashed spaceship in the mountains – monstrous, lonely and deserted.
