Divided Sky

Cooperation event with the representative of the state of Brandenburg for the reappraisal of the communist dictatorship

Since Christa Wolf's novel of the same name, the sky over Germany was not only divided, it was above all perfectly monitored. Pilots of sport or agricultural aircraft were constantly checked. Nevertheless, between 1962 and 1989 a total of 48 people managed to leave the DDR by air in 25 escape operations. Claus Gerhard researched the escape stories on the basis of extensive archive studies and with the help of eyewitness conversations and wrote them down in his book »The monitored heaven«. In addition to the poignant fate of pilots, he documents astonishing weaknesses in state security.
