More than two million photos make up the visual legacy of the MfS. The Stasi regarded photography as an »important weapon« on the »invisible front«. When they shadowed opposition members, investigated escape and protest actions, monitored service buildings, documented their own work – reaching for the camera was part of their job. The illustrated book provides insights into the image world of the State Security, analyses the creation and function of the photographs in the repression system of the SED state and presents unexpected insights into everyday life in the DDR.
