Book premiere »GDR Daily Life in 200 Objects«

Objects of everyday life and consumption were used for a long time and frequently repaired in the GDR. In contrast to today’s »throw-away society«, the GDR could be called a »society of keepers«.

These legacies are preserved in the DDR Museum’s collection. Together with our latest publication »GDR daily life in 200 objects«, the objects presented here present a cross-section from our museum storehouse. Behind each of these everyday objects lies a personal story in addition to the creative work of the designers.

The sometimes-inconspicuous objects – from the K 109 coffee machine to the refrigerator to the mantlepiece clock – provide an insight into the everyday life of the people of the vanished state. An everyday life that moved between the state party’s claim to omnipotence and a little bit of private happiness.
