Heinz Graffunder (1926-1994) is no stranger to the history of GDR architecture. He was significantly involved in the planning of the Palace of the Republic and the Rathauspassagen. His buildings for zoos and zoological gardens have received less public attention. These include the Alfred Brehm House in the Berlin-Friedrichsfelde Zoo, completed in 1963, at the time probably the largest predator house in the world, but above all a fascinating synthesis of tropical plants and animal enclosures. Natascha Meuser has written a comprehensive book on this subject, which sheds new light on this area of architecture.
