What influences young East Germans today?

The GDR, German reunification and Generation Z

The expectation that East-West differences would disappear over time has not been fulfilled. Among the so-called post-reunification children in particular, an independent East German identity is increasingly developing. In her book »Vereint in Zerrissenheit« (United in Division), Nora Zabel gives a voice to the East German Generation Z. Those born in the 1990s did not experience the GDR themselves, but they still feel its aftermath today. They continue to be confronted with inequalities between East and West, which manifest themselves in differences in educational and career opportunities, for example. In her book presentation, Zabel shares the experiences of her generation and discusses how German unity can be achieved after 35 years.
