The Wild West in the East

Native Americans in East Germany?

The state initially struggled with the Wild West, before a new exhibition was even launched in 1985 at the Karl May Museum in Radebeul near Dresden. Solidarity with Native Americans was easier, as shown by the Indian films often produced by the GDR with actor Gojko Mitic. They also inspired Wolfgang Kring to set up his own »Apache Live Stunt Show« and, with homemade accessories and lots of action, continues to thrill his audience in Mecklenburg to this day. The focus of the evening is the documentary film »Traumfänger« (Dreamcatcher) by Andreas Höntsch about the life story of Wolfgang Kring. It shows that in the teepee, great freedom could be lived on a small scale.
