Finally money from the West

The Monetary Union of 1 July 1990

The Peaceful Revolution reached its provisional conclusion with the fall of the Berlin Wall in autumn 1989, but when can we talk about German unity? On 3 October 1990 or on 1 July 1990, the date of monetary, economic and social union? What is certain is that with the adoption of the economic and socio-political system of the Federal Republic and the introduction of the D-Mark as the sole means of payment in the GDR, unity was formally largely complete. At last, Western money was no longer the projection screen for unfulfilled consumer desires. However, the cat's meow of the first redundancies and rising costs was not long in coming. All this is shown in the new special exhibition to mark the 35th anniversary of monetary union, which opens that evening.
