lIn our blog we try to give hints for foreign-language people which are interested in GDR history. We presented books or translate some of our blog articles into English. A new category we want to open for you is a hint to websites, institutions or museums which deal with the GDR in English or another foreign language.

After a lot of presented books here, it is really difficult to find another one in our library which is recommendable for foreign-language people. We have a lot of books, but unfortunately not so much in English. For the presentation today my colleague Melanie found still one. It is not only a book about the GDR; it is a history of Berlin.

In the last months we supported a project of students, which I want to present you. Students of media technology of the “Hochschule für Technik, Wirtschaft und Kultur” in Leipzig created the Homepage www.ddr-medien.de. The DDR Museum was on hand with help and advice for the students in different sections.

Since some weeks, I am doing an internship at the DDR Museum. I studied Communication and Media Science, especially Social Media Marketing. That was the reason why I wrote my thesis about the importance of Social Media Marketing for museums.

The P 605 is a shapely and easy to service pendant lamp. It is made of lacquered aluminum and became one of the true classics of East German Design. Exactly 50 years ago, it came to the GDR market. A good reason to tell you more about it!

In our series “6 questions to…” we regularly present you a colleague of the DDR Museum or the DDR Restaurant Domklause. This time I spoke with Robert Rückel, Managing Director & Curator of the DDR Museum.

The last book I presented to you in our blog was a novel, a fictive story about some people in Berlin and around the killing strip. Today my book presentation is about real history, about facts and figures, about true events and the people who are involved in it.

The recipe, we present you today, is exceptional and really extensive. Maybe you want to make your loved ones a special treat for Easter and use the holidays for the preparation of a feast.

Today I want to present you a slightly different book out of our library. The GDR is topic in it, too, but in another form as usually. The book, I want to present to you, is the novel “The Killing Strip”, written by Anthony Underhill in 2010.

When one of the most important East German photographers, Gundula Schulze Endowy, looks through the lens of her camera, she looks contemporaneous not only in the life of her counterpart, but also seemingly in his soul. She sensitively shows the life in the GDR, how it was, unvarnished and beautiful at the same time, the life and the people in all its facets.

“No one has the intention of building a wall.” A sentence said by Walter Ulbricht on the 15th of June 1961, which nearly everybody knows today. A sentence which was one of the biggest lies in the German history. Two months later the GDR regime began with the building of the Wall. And this Wall determined for 28 years the life of the people in East and West Berlin.

A creative artist, who tried to adapt himself to the conceptions and requirements of the GDR regime and who ran there into borders in several respects, is the painter, graphic artist and sculptor A. R. Penck, native Ralf Winkler. Artists without borders: The painter A. R. Penck

The books in our library deal often with the history of the GDR, the political situation or the situation of the people who lived in the GDR. Often the events of the Fall of the Wall or the Stasi are the topics. But beside these books, there are also books of GDR authors which were translated into English. This time I want to present you the book “No Place on earth”, a novel written by Christa Wolf.

Since the founding of the DDR, the state has exerted influence on its artists and cultural workers. One important photographer who felt the effects of this state control on several occasions was Sibylle Bergemann, who nevertheless managed to find her own artistic path, especially in the DDR, and to go beyond all boundaries. Her photographs tell stories, stories of people from East Berlin, from their everyday lives, deep and melancholic, genuine and sometimes critical, but always unadulterated and beautiful – the story of a city.

I present every two weeks an English book out of our library and a few times picture books with photos of the divided Berlin were subjects of my book presentation. But it is also interesting to know, what happened actually with East and West Berlin after the Fall of the Wall? What changed in the city? What happened with the buildings of the GDR government etc.?

Paula Kirby, a writer who lived and worked in Dresden, is one of the rare guest authors in the blog of the DDR Museum. She experienced such an interesting story, that our spokeswoman Melanie Alperstaedt asked her in 2011 to write in our blog about it.

“Nothing is so bad that it does not also bear within it the seed of something good.” (Chinese saying). This saying Hermann Waldenburg prefaces his introducing essay for “The Berlin Wall Book”. And he tries to confirm this saying with his photos of the paintings on the Berlin Wall. He collected these photos and brought them together in one little book with a lot of pictures which was published 2012 by the Nicolai Verlag.

When I thought about photographs of the former GDR I often had the picture in mind, that these are black and white, or better: grey. This view is obviously a fallacy because of course you can find color photos of the GDR, too. A book which calls this into my consciousness is the book “DDR in Color”, in 2013 published in the Berlin Story Verlag and edited by Klaus Morgenstern and the ddrbildarchiv.de.
