Today, we celebrate the third birthday of the DDR Museum. There is no official party, but the director invites us for dinner in a nice restaurant.
Three years are a long time and on birthdays I usually remember, what happend the last hours, days, months, weeks and years. Because of working for the museum in the beginning, when it was planned, I have a personal relationship to it. I remember the first ideas, the plans of the architect, the building site, the exitement before the opening, the opening, the party and the champagne of course.
I also think about the development of the museum. Today, it is one of the most visited museums in Berlin and I am proud to work here. In the beginning, when I was telling my friends and family where I am working, I always had to explain, where the museum is and what the exhibition is about. Today, when I tell someone about my job, they look at me with excitement and say something like: "Ah, the DDR Museum at the Karl-Liebknecht-Str.?! Really?! I have been there..." Or I see people walking around with our flyer in their hands and somehow I still get excited about it. Funny, isn`t it?
When I opened the door to our office today, I told everybody "Happy Birthday", because for me, it is not only the birthday of the museum, it is somehow our bithday.
...well...while we`re on it: where are my presents?!....;)
