Potato soup Berlin style

Back then, potato soup was a very popular dish, because it was fast and simple to make. Furthermore, all the ingredients for this soup were always available and affordable. Today, we would like to introduce a recipe from the times of the GDR. Of course there were also many more variations which surely also were quite delicious. Just try them!

Today, we would like to introduce a recipe from the times of the GDR. Of course there were also many more variations which surely also were quite delicious. Just try them!

Ingredients

350 g peeled potatoes
bunch of greens
1 onion
50 g fat-less bacon
1 liter meat broth
125 ml sweet cream
30 g butter
1 piece of white bread
1 bay leave
2 pieces of pimento
½ teaspoon caraway
marjoram
salt/pepper

Preparation

  • cook diced onion in a pan, then take it out and set apart
  • steam the greens in fat and add meat broth add peeled potatoes and let skim
  • add spices and let cook for 20 minutes
  • pour everything through a sieve and add cream
  • add marjoram and salt according to taste
  • cut piece of bread into small cubes and roast in butter until golden yellow
  • sprinkle bacon and bread cubes over soup before serving

Some minced parsley will add to the optical appearance of the soup. You can also add some bock wurst. Also Vienna sausages, blood sausage or Jagdwurst (“hunting sausage”) are good alternatives.

You will need approximately 45 minutes to prepare the traditional potato soup Berlin style.
