I present every two weeks an English book out of our library and a few times picture books with photos of the divided Berlin were subjects of my book presentation. But it is also interesting to know, what happened actually with East and West Berlin after the Fall of the Wall? What changed in the city? What happened with the buildings of the GDR government etc.?
In the Berlin Story Verlag a picture book was published in 2012 which deals with exactly that topic. The photographer Robert Grahn witnessed the change of Berlin and its transformation from the sky and tells with his photos a ‘Cinderella Story’ of the city.
Beside the photos are brief explanations what exactly changed at that location and for a better vividness there are pictures before and after the transformations. The photos show for example the Karl-Marx-Allee or the Alexanderplatz, but not only the changes in East Berlin you can find in the book, also is the west of the city in focus. At the end of the book there is a map where you can see the different locations of change.
In addition to all transformations the photos also show a city which tries to grow together after 28 years of division and that`s really interesting. The book is in 5 languages, beside English the texts are in German, Spanish, Italian and French, so it’s recommendable for an international readership.
You can order the book for 19,80€ from the Berlin Story Verlag. The ISBN is 978-3-86368-041-1.
