The DDR Museum has recently been certified as a barrier-free cultural institution. It has been graded after the nationwide label "Traveling for all" which is oriented at specific criteria of the project of the same name.

For people living with physical or cognitive limitations, everyday life does represent a number of obstacles. Participating in the cultural life is not always managable without problems, as well. For about 7 Million people living with a handicap in Germany and for about 50 Million in Europe, traveling is especially challenging (Source: http://www.visitberlin.de/de/artikel/reisen-fuer-alle). Out of this reason, a project called "Einführung des Kennzeichens "Reisen für alle" im Sinne eins Tourismus für alle in Deutschland" (Introduction of the label "Traveling for all" in the sense of a tourism for everyone in Germany) has been initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy. In the context of the project, a number of criteria will be developed which will then be used to rate cultural and touristic institutions in the sense of a nationwide accessibility and inclusion. Among the partners supporting the project are organizations of the parties involved, the Nationale Koordinationsstelle für barrierefreien Tourismus e.V. (National Coordination Center for a barrier-free tourism) as well as cultural institutions themselves.

The criteria are catered to the special needs of people with walking impairments, people using a wheelchair, those with hearing and visual impairments, people who are blind or deaf as well as individuals with a cognitive impairment. The DDR Museum has been awarded with the license because of its accessibility for people living with a walking impairment. The necessary conditions which had to be achieved in order to receive a license are the following: The exhibition space may only include one step with a maximum height of 21cm. Also, all passage ways and paths need to be at least 70cm wide. The licence has been issued to our museum by the Berlin Tourismus & Kongress GmbH.

In case you have any questions concerning the accessibility of the DDR Museum, please do not hesitate to contact our colleagues at the department of visitor relations. We will gladly assist you in making your visit as pleasant and barrier-free as possible!
