The German Bundestag offers on its’ homepage a lot of information about the history of the German parliamentarism. From its beginning till today there are articles, photos and historical documents. This information is available in German, but also in some other languages, for example in English and French.

As a part of the German history and because of that as a part of the history of German parliamentarism you can find there detailed information about the political system of the German Democratic Republic. After an introduction to the political system in the GDR the whole system is explained.

You get to know something about the Peoples’ Chamber, the SED, the distribution of seats and the sittings of the People’s Chamber. Besides that there is some information about the Palace of the Republic, where the plenary sittings were held in the GDR.

Another whole chapter has a focus on the first free elections for the Peoples’ Chamber. These were in March 1990 after the Peaceful Revolution in autumn 1989. With the free elections the former dictatorship transformed itself into a democracy. In that chapter you can find videos of the sittings of the freely elected Peoples’ Chamber, which are as original recordings really interesting.

In opposite to the developments in the GDR you can inform yourself about the developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, too. So you can trace the history of the parliamentarism of the both German states in parallel.

If you are especially interested in the political system of the GDR I could recommend you the page of the German Bundestag. Because in its’ role as the German parliament it is predestinated for informing about the political systems you could find in German history.

For our blog we always search for new aspects regarding the GDR history, especially for our foreign-language readers. If you have a hint for us, is it a book, a website or a museum, you could write an email to: valerie.holbein@ddr-museum.de. I’m glad about every single tip!
