Greetings from Malmö, Sweden

In our category “Guests from all over the world” we want to share with you how international the audience of the DDR Museum is. From all four cardinal directions the visitors come to Berlin and to the DDR Museum. Many of them leave a greeting in our guestbook. Some of them we want to present you here and above all on our Visitor’s Book pin board at Pinterest. Maybe your greeting is soon present there?

In our category “Guests from all over the world” we want to share with you how international the audience of the DDR Museum is. From all four cardinal directions the visitors come to Berlin and to the DDR Museum. Many of them leave a greeting in our guestbook. Some of them we want to present you here and above all on our Visitor’s Book pin board at Pinterest. Maybe your greeting is soon present there?

Today we show you a greeting from Malmö, Sweden, which you can find now on our pin board.

Sweden was for the external propaganda of the GDR a preferred country. Through its cultural activities the GDR was successful in influencing massively the Swedish society and its picture of the GDR. An important role played the GDR-cultural center, which was founded after the approval of the GDR. It constrained the renaming of the “Deutsche Institut der Bundesrepublik” into “Goethe-Institut”.  The German editing of the GDR-cultural center, which was controlled by the Stasi and whose representatives were multiply recalled because of narrow Swedish contacts and ideological unreliability, developed a busy activity at schools and universities. Especially successful was the cooperation with the “Freundschaftsgesellschaft Schweden-DDR” to which belong leading Swedish cultural politician. Through that the GDR received influence on the German classes, perhaps by a decree, after what the authors of textbooks were constrained to objectivity. So they weren’t allowed to write critique of the social system of the GDR.

The “Freundschaftsgesellschaft Schweden-DDR” was a pro-communist association founded on the 23rd of October in 1956 and represented the most important cultural partner of the GDR in Sweden. It considered itself as a part of the Swedish peace movement, should foster the cooperation between Sweden and the GDR and inform about the East German state. The peace society worked till 1972 above all for the political and diplomatically acceptation of the GDR. Furthermore it promoted for the intensification of bilateral relationships, peaceful coexistence and also the support of the socialist state. Its pendant was the society “DDR-Norden” respectively the 1981 founded  “Freundschaftsgesellschaft DDR-Schweden“.

Sweden applied itself also constructional in the GDR: In April 1977 opened for example the Interhotel Metropol in the Berlin Friedrichstreet its doors. In eleven floors it was equipped with over 700 accommodation options in single and double rooms and apartments. It was developed by order of the “Vereinigung Interhotel der DDR” by the Swedish company SIAB in cooperation with the “VEB Innenprojekt Halle”, the “VEK Tiefbau Berlin” and other partner companies. After building conversions today there stands the Maritim Hotel proArte.

Thanks a lot and lovely greetings back from Berlin to Malmö!
