In the category “Guests from all over the world” we would like to share how international is the public of the DDR Museum. Visitors come to visit Berlin and the DDR Museum from all around the world. Many of them leave a comment in our guestbook. We are going to display some of them here and on our Guestbook-Board on Pinterest. Maybe your comment will be shown soon too?
Today we present a greeting from Canada. In the seventies the GDR tried to reach a milion Canadians of German descendants through the “Montrealer Nachrichten” newspaper, coming to an agreement with the editor Mario Heil-de Bretani. He started a dedicated campaign for a fast recognition of the GDR. Important for this initiative is the publication of the “sensational result” of a signature campaign, according to which more than 200.000 citizen of Canada had voted for the recognition of GDR. The outcome did not remain unnoticed also among canadian politicians. The GDR recompensed Mario Heil-de Bretani for his efforts with a great reward of money and with the awarding of the golden medall of the “Liga der Völkerfreundschaft” (Liga of Friends of the State) and the “Deutschen Friedensmedaille" (The medal of German peace).
Till it turned out that on the original campaign list only 36 names were written. The publisher explained the difference asserting that were the organisations that have signed on behalf of politicians, labor unionists and Communists. It was a scandal! Canada gouvernement felt being cheated and stopped the conversation with the GDR, which already get stuck on the question of organized family reunion. Also the GDR was outraged und immediately discontinued the cooperation.Allegedly only in the following attempts to blame the lying publisher, they found out that he was a prominent propoganda journalist of the Nazis already during the 2nd World War, among other he was head of publisher of the newspaper of Africa-Corps “Oase”. It is still unclear how the GDR could be taken in by him.
Many thanks and very warm greetings from Berlin to Canada!
