Since some weeks, I am doing an internship at the DDR Museum. I studied Communication and Media Science, especially Social Media Marketing. That was the reason why I wrote my thesis about the importance of Social Media Marketing for museums.

I am from Italy and I was always interested in GDR history. Concerning GDR history, I probably have a different point of view. I am not from Germany and so me and my personal environment have no personal connection to the German Democratic Republic. So I gain my own experiences at the DDR Museum. What I like the best is the interactive and entertaining concept of the exhibition. There are so many thematic aspects and unique objects! It is nearly impossible to decide, which one is the most interesting!

But the topic I wondered the most about is nudism! That nudism was so popular in the GDR was a surprise for me, because in the catholic Italy, nudism is nearly a taboo subject. Sure, there are some certain beaches were the people are naked. But I suppose that most people in Italy think, that nudism could offend others. So the handling of nudism in the GDR was totally different than nowadays in Italy.

If I could take something from the exhibition with me, it would be a certain t-shirt out of the wardrobe. It is white and it has a print: A couple kissing! When you see it, you think it`s from the 1980ies! I think it is very fashionable and as an Italian woman, I am very interested in fashion! I know, I confirm a popular stereotype! But of course, the t-shirt will stay where it is! But I will take some egg cups with me, because they have a typical GDR design. They look like a chicken and are made of plastic. But do not worry, I won`t steal them, I buy them at the museum shop! They will be a nice souvenir for my family.

And If I would be allowed to take only one picture of the DDR Museum, I would choose to photograph the living room. Inside of it, you feel a certain atmosphere and you are allowed to open all the drawers and cupboards! This room is so different to what I know from Italy and when I saw it for the first time, it was a very interesting experience!

Because of all this, it is so amazing to work for the DDR Museum. Every day, I learn something new about German history and this is a great personal gain!
