Today we would like to introduce to you one of our tours, which of course is also suitable for school groups. The Karl-Marx-Allee Tour is a combined tour, meaning that it will start with a one-hour visit of the DDR Museum, followed by a two-hour walk along the Alexanderplatz as well as the socialist boulevard.

The tour starts at the DDR Museum, where our visitors can learn about everyday life in the GDR with the help of the different topic sections in our exhibition. After that the tour will continue to the Marienkirche, where the guide will tell you interesting facts about the relationship between the state and the church in the GDR. The next stop will be the Rotes Rathaus which derives its name from its red brick facade. Next to the Rotes Rathaus there are a number of buildings made with precast concrete slabs, which by the way also existed outside of the GDR! They were also common in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as in France; the GDR therefore simply followed an international trend. The following sight will be the famous Alexanderplatz. Here you will see the so-called Weltzeituhr, a clock showing times around the world. You will also learn about the department store culture in the GDR.

The Karl-Marx-Allee is situated in the districts Friedrichshain and Mitte. In Mitte there are mostly prefabricated buildings from the 1960s, whereas Friedrichshain is characterized by apartment buildings and towers. The tour will continue along the Karl-Marx-Allee, which was oftentimes in the center of demonstrations, all the way up to the Strausberger Platz, which was the starting point of the national uprising of June 17th in 1953. Looking at the prefabricated buildings from the 1970s, your guide will tell you the story of the Stalin statue. You can find more relevant information at the Café Sybille which houses a small exhibition about the topic. The tour will come to an end at the U-Bahn station Weberwiese where you will learn about the changes in architecture and will of course have the opportunity to ask questions!

The socialist boulevard perfectly illustrates architecture and apartment construction in the GDR and is therefor very well suited for for school groups. The visit of our exhibition at the beginning of the tour serves as a thorough introduction into the topic by informing the visitor about all spheres of the life in the GDR. The following tour taking place outside will create a diverse and interesting program for your students.

The tour takes 180 minutes and costs 135,-€, the price for a tour in German language is 130,-€. All prices are valid for up to 20 persons, bigger groups will be divided among a number of guides, taking place at the same time. You can find more information about our educational program on the teachers section on our website.
