Every year, the DTZ (German National Tourist Board) is asking international visitors to name their favourite places in Germany. In 2016, the 40,000 participants of the survey voted the DDR Museum on number 36. We would like to thank everyone who gave us their voice for this great ranking!

Capitol, landscapes, theme parks

Thousands of people from all over the world are choosing Germany (and Berlin, of course) as a travel destination. Popular sights are, for example, wonderful landscapes such as the Harz region or the Mosel valley as well as major German cities such as Hamburg, Berlin or Cologne. Among the top 100 sights international travellers voted attractions such as famous buildings, historial locations and natural landscapes as well as sports venues, theme parks and traditional events.

The top attraction in 2016 is the Miniatur Wonderland Hamburg, the world's biggest model railway. The Heidelberg Castle and old quarter were voted 2nd place, the theme park Europa-Park was voted 3rd place. In 2014, the DDR Museum was ranked as the 94th most popular attraction and in 2015 the 44th, our museum is very happy about this year's ranking as the 36th most popular sight in all of Germany. This vote makes the DDR Museum more popular than famous sights in Berlin such as the TV tower, the Berlin Wall or the Museum Island.

Extended permanent exhibition since August 2016

The DDR Museum is giving thanks for this praise and is warmly inviting everyone to discover the new part of the permanent exhibition "Everyday life in the Plattenbau" which opened in August 2016. Via a simulated elevator the visitor reaches an authentically designed Plattnebau apartment of the WBS 70 series which is furnished almost exclusively with original objects and items of furniture. Our guests will learn about topics such as youth, culture or health in the DDR in a playful and interactive way.

We are looking forward to your visit!
