„Crumpled City" ... never heard of it? I didn't know about the conception either until a few days ago. Now, that this incomparable city map lies on my desk, I am completely excited. It is a city map of Berlin which isn't printed on traditional paper, but on a sort of "paper foil". This foil has specific characteristics - and one of the most important features is that you can crumple it without quality loss!
Yes, that is right. You don't have to handle this city map carefully and also it is easy to get back to the original state because you don't have to fold it. The city map is in a small bag and weighs 20 grams. Besides, it is very resistant, tear-proof and water-repellent. The crumpled city map should fit almost everywhere. With all our strength, we can crumple it into a ball of 15cm in circumference or 6-7cm in diameter.
The „DDR Museum edition" of Crumpled City contains a city map of Berlin but also a plan of our exhibition. The Berlin Wall is indicated, as well as the Berlin Stars and other important sights.
This city map is uncomplicated, but especially multifaceted thanks to the tyvek material and its characteristics. The following list shows a few ideas for alienated usage of the city map:
· Ball substitution (for humans and animals)
· Peace flag
· Bib
· Gift wrap
· For waving
· Rain protection
· Neckerchief
· Transportation help
· Base to sit on, e.g. on a meadow
· Bolster or neck support for travelling
· Sleeping mask
· Rope substitution for tug of war
... as you can see, there are no limits to your creativity. The city map is available at our museum or at our online shop for 15,00 €.
