This clutching film deals with the formation and development of dissident groups in the GDR between 1949 until 1989.
It is a documentary that shows the historical and social conditions of the political system in the GDR and how this social reality left a mark on the citizens.
"The Burning Wall" - which was published in 2002 - is very emotional and shows individual destinies. The documentary is packed full of original historical footage - it also contains rare footage of Young Pioneer and Freie Deutsche Jugend rallies.
Hava Beller investigates the utterly contemporary dilemma of individual resistance within a totalitarian state like the German Democratic Republic.
At first, there are only a few individual acts of resistance but it soon becomes clear that this resistance develops into a whole dissident movement which leads to the collapse of the GDR system among other things.
In my opinion, this almost two hour documentary about the rise and fall of the GDR is especially recommendable due to the present inteviews with dissidents and Stasi officers.
