Press conference: »GDR in Objects 1949-1990. Leisure, Culture, Travel«

Berlin, September 22, 2020 – On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Reunification, the DDR Museum publishes »GDR in Objects 1949-1990. Leisure, Culture, Travel«, the second of a total of three volumes. The 400-page standard work with over 1,100 objects from the world's largest museum DDR collection with 300,000 artifacts will be published on October 1, 2020 with 4,000 copies in a limited edition. The German and English language book will be available exclusively in the shop of the DDR Museum and in the online shop.

Over the course of two years, the collection experts have brought together striking and everyday as well as unusual artifacts from four decades of the DDR. »The second volume of the trilogy is a cross section of leisure life in the DDR. The collected objects exemplarily show how economy, politics and ideology had affected the leisure activities of DDR citizens over the course of four decades,« says the head of collections Jörn Kleinhardt.

The texts of the scientific director of the museum, Dr. Stefan Wolle, as well as the business author Quirin Graf Adelmann v.A. complete this »material journey into the past« with entertaining and informative insights into everyday life as well as the economic and product history of the German Democratic Republic. The first volume in the series was published on the 14th birthday of the DDR Museum on July 15, 2020 on the topics of daily life, home and consumption. The third and last one on the topics of work, economy and politics will be published in spring 2021.
