On the (almost) forgotten traces of the Berlin Wall

Invitation: On the (almost) forgotten traces of the Berlin Wall

Berlin, September 19, 2019 – On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the DDR Museum, in cooperation with the Berlin Wall Foundation, commemorates an almost forgotten section of the Berlin Wall in the district of Pankow. We invite you to discover this place and learn more about the meaning of the Wall and the memory of it on September 26 at 10.30 am.

The original section of 60 meters in length is located near the Dolomitenstraße in Pankow, less than 500 meters from the actual border with West Berlin. This »hinterland wall« belongs to an originally several hundred meter long section, which led along the railway line Berlin-Szczecin. This border system is thus part of the so-called apron protection, behind which was the actual border area.

This preserved part of the Berlin Wall in the midst of a residential area shows how the border fortifications reached directly into people's lives. Today, such places offer starting points for local historical research and thus deepen the understanding of the city's own history. The Berlin Wall Foundation and the DDR Museum want to help ensure that these sections of the Wall away from the city centre are not forgotten. Together, their documentation and their preservation should be supported.

We cordially invite you to attend the press conference with the historians Manfred Wichmann (Berlin Wall Foundation) and Sören Marotz (DDR Museum) to discover this piece of the Wall and learn more about one of the many traces of the German division.

In addition to this press event, we would like to ask the public to come forward with clues to other relics of the Wall: sammlung@stiftung-berliner-mauer.de.
