New permanent exhibition, double size

The DDR Museum has grown: On the 10th of October, the DDR Museum opened it`s second section of the exhibition and thereby doubled it`s exhibition.

Numerous new subject areas like state, economy, NVA or brothernations are waiting for you. Unique exhibits like the Volvo state carriage, a contact mine from the inner-German border, the "WTsche telephone" or the 1-Megabit-Chip are open to the public. You will experience never before seen technical installations: Walk through the Fogscreen, listen to an interrogation by the use of your bones , take part of the election of the Volkskammer, become a manager of the VEB Sachsenring or design the new socialistic human. And keep an eye on Marx, Engels and Lenin...

  DDR-Restaurant Domklause
A tasty experience of history

Also opened on 9th of October 2010, the GDR Restaurant serves authentic GDR cuisine according to original recipes. Next door to the DDR Museum, only a stone's throw from Berlin Cathedral, the exceptional surroundings of the restaurant, dominated by the mural "in Praise of Communism" from Ronald Paris makes for a unique culinary experience. Head Chef Hans-Jürgen Leucht, former Sous-chef of the restaurant in the 1980s was only too happy to return to his former workplace and re-create the tastes and smells of a state which has long since disappeared: gold broiler, steak au four and Jägerschnitzel.

The Berlin Wall – Her True Colors
Book launch and slide lecture with professor Wolfgang Petro
With the publication of his private photos of the Berlin wall, Wolfgang Petro created an unique illustrated book.
The probably most insistent symbol of divided Germany was the insurmountable deadly Border Installiation. The pictures of Wolfgang Petro document this perfected system. From an unusual perspective, the reader looks behind the facade of the Berlin Wall and takes a glance at the people, who guarded the border.

I Won`t Do That – Self-determined Career Biographies in the GDR
Book presentation by the Christoph Links Verlag
Who marched to a different drummer in the GDR was fastly called “asocial”. Nevertheless, some people tried to live their life independently, outside of usual employer-employee relationships. Such self-determined career biographies are the topic of Dirk Molts social study.

On the basis of twelve East-German life stories, the authors describes, why individuals thought, that freedom is more important than social security and social recognition.

I Can`t Get no SEDisfaction
Rock opera by Katharina Heinius
In the beginning, there was a rumor. On the republics birthday, the 7th october 1969, the Rolling Stones would play a concert on the roof of the Springerskyscraper directly at the wall. Some people believed the rumor, others wanted to know what would happen. Fans from all over the GDR came to Berlin. But instead of the Rolling Stones, the police was waiting with dogs and truncheons for them.
Teenager from Frankfurt am Main wrote a rock opera , wich will be presented at the DDR-Restaurant “Domklause” to a wider audience for the first time.

The border through Berlin is hardly conceivable today: It devided families, friends and colleagues. Nearly 30 years it imprisoned the people.  136 persons payed for the trial to overcome it with their lives. The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 was cheered by an entire nation. 20 years after, a lot is forgotten or repressed. There is much to be learnt from this game and lots of fun to be had, wether you're playing alone or in a group, and for Wall connoisseurs and Wall novices alike!
