A museum is never finished
A museum never stands still, but depends on continual development for its survival. Although open since 2006, we are always looking for sources of inspiration to supplement our existing services.
COLLECT, PRESERVE, RESEARCH
Our extensive collection of objects from the GDR will probably never be complete; such is the variety of original material bearing witness to the nature of life in the former GDR. As we concentrate on objects from everyday life, we are reliant on the generosity of ordinary people: those seeking to empty their cellar, dispose of an inheritance or simply replace their old coffee machine. We have published an internet list of all the objects which we are most interested in acquiring. Perhaps you can help?
OUR FOCUS ON CONTEMPORARY WITNESSES WITH MEMORIES OF THE GDR
The foundation of the GDR was over 50 years ago and a whole generation separates us from the fall of the wall on 9 November 1989. Indeed, many young people do not have any contact with family or friends who can recount their experience of life in the GDR. The GDR Museum fulfils an important function in this respect, documenting history-as-experienced and allowing audiences to hear the testimony of contemporary witnesses. We would be very happy to hear from anyone who lived in the GDR and wants to record their own history.
