Concrete-slab building

Quality-wise, the old, pre-war period houses are actually as antiquated as they look: coal heating, no bathroom, shared toilets, single-glass windows and damp walls. This did not change much, since hardly any new flats were built in the 1950s and 1960s. The housing shortage became a central, socio-political problem.

The representative enlargement of the city centers was stopped in the early 1970s. Instead, concrete-slab housing estates on the edges of the big cities sprang up like mushrooms. But to get a good flat you had to go through the housing office, since housing space was allocated by the government. Those who could afford it, or had good connections and lots of luck received
one of the popular »fully-furnished« flats.

Enter an authentic GDR apartment, explore a typical kitchen or lounge at the sofa, rummage in the wall unit, watch TV or pick up the phone. But beware of wiretapping...

Flick from one TV channel to the next and choose between East and West German programs and do not forget to pick up the phone!
