What do you know about the "Ampelmännchen"?

The Times published an interesting and informative article about a very well known symbol of the GDR: The "Ampelmännchen". This little green man is a traffic light symbol, which was common in the GDR and "survived" the reunification. You do not understand, why the "Ampelmännchen" is so special?
