Karl Marx made of ceramics and Curry-flavoured peanuts: New products in the museum shop

Whether you are looking for a gift, a souvenir or a little something for yourself – the museum shop of the DDR Museum holds a wide variety of products related to the DDR. In the following text we would like to introduce to you some of the special highlights.

Already in February 2017, the DDR Museum presented a completely new designed shop area. Since then, the new sales floor can be accessed by the visitor right after exiting the exhibition. Our guests therefore have the opportunity to freely peruse the many interesting products without any rush. The shop has now been optimized once more last week – both from the outside as well as from the inside!

The DDR Museum has been using the premises for about eleven years – accordingly, a new coat of paint for the walls was in order.  A warm grey is now offering a calm background for the colorful and various shop articles. A new lighting system is going to support the ideal presentation of the products.  There will be even more exciting changes in the following months.

Since the beginning of the redesign, a number of new products have been added to the assortment of our shop. Whether literature, something to eat or clothing – many product lines are now available for visitors with all sorts of interests as well as budgets. I am now going to introduce some of the very special highlights:

The ceramic bust of Karl Marx is actually a savings box. A slit at the great philosopher’s back of the head lets you put coins or notes into the box. The base of the object reads the title of the classic “Das Kapital” – considering the work’s heavy criticism of capitalism this truly is an object with a wink! The savings box is available in our shop for 15,-€.

The magnetic hand puppets from the “Magnetic Personalities” series are also related to famous personalities from politics and philosophy. The magnet is hidden in the dolls’ back of the head so you can place them to your fridge at home. For 9,50€ you can buy a plush version of Immanuel Kant, Che Guevara, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx as well as Schrödinger’s cat.

The Frisbees from DONKEY are perfect for everyone who likes to be active outdoors. There are two versions available in our shop: A plate with a colorful floral pattern as well as a vinyl record. The object was by the way referred to as “Wurfscheibe” in the DDR and is available for 9, 90€ at the shop.

Another very special product line are the limited-edition T-shirts, available for 19, 90€. Printed in an authentic retro look with a modern twist and showing motifs drawn from the height of the DDR, they are truly a unique gift. We also stock a range of other products designed by the DDR Museums – there will be even more in the future!

For those who became a little hungry after their visit to the exhibition, the museum shop offers a special savoury treat: The Original Berliner Curry nuts for 3, 99€ are wrapped in the typical paper plate on which a currywurst in served on. The product is free from artificial flavouring agents and has a delicious curry-flavoured taste.

In case you are now feeling like visiting our museum shop (also a great tip for Berliners, by the way!) you don’t necessarily have to visit our exhibition in advance. The saleroom is also accessible from the Spree promenade outside. We wish you a pleasant shopping experience!
